So what do they actually mean? Here's our simple explanation - the way we'd explain it to a friend over coffee:
100% Mulberry Silk
Mulberry silk is produced by silkworms fed exclusively on mulberry leaves. This specialised diet creates fibres that are exceptionally fine, uniform and strong, resulting in silk that’s smoother, softer and more durable.
When we say 100% mulberry silk, we mean exactly that: pure silk, not blended with cheaper fibres or synthetic materials to reduce costs, as some products quietly are.
It’s the foundation of everything we make.
Grade 6A: The Quality of the Fibre
Not all silk is created equal.
Raw silk is graded based on several characteristics, including fibre length, uniformity, strength, cleanliness and colour. In the grading scale most commonly used within the industry, Grade 6A is considered the highest quality.
Long, even fibres create silk that feels smoother against the skin, drapes beautifully and remains durable over time.
While silk grading isn’t governed by a single international standard, Grade 6A is widely recognized as a strong indicator of premium fibre quality, especially when considered alongside other factors such as silk composition and momme.
Momme: The Weight and Feel of Silk
Momme (often written as mm) measures the weight and density of silk fabric. In general, a higher momme means a denser weave, giving the fabric a slightly more substantial feel while improving durability. Most quality silk sleepwear falls between 16 and 22 momme.
At Silk Madame, we chose 19 momme because we believe it strikes the perfect balance, substantial enough to feel luxurious and long-lasting, yet light, fluid and breathable enough for Singapore’s warm climate. For us, it's the sweet spot.
