Silk vs Satin: What's the Difference?

Silk vs Satin: What's the Difference?

Silk and satin are often mistaken for the same thing, but they’re fundamentally different.

Silk is a natural fiber. Satin is a type of weave. The distinction matters more than most people realize, because while satin can be woven from silk, most satin products sold today are actually made from polyester. They may look similar in photos, but they feel very different once you’re wearing or sleeping on them.

When we were starting Silk Madame, this was one of the biggest misconceptions we kept coming across. We’d see beautiful “silk” sleepwear everywhere, often at prices that seemed too good to be true. More often than not, what was actually being sold was polyester satin.

As consumers ourselves, we felt it was important to understand the difference.

Silk vs Satin: One is a Fibre, the Other is a Weave

Silk is a natural protein fibre produced by silkworms. Each cocoon contains an incredibly long, continuous filament that gives genuine silk its smooth texture, fluid drape and natural lustre.

Mulberry silk, the silk we use at Silk Madame, is widely regarded as the finest quality silk because the silkworms are fed exclusively on mulberry leaves, producing fibres that are exceptionally uniform, smooth and strong.

Satin, on the other hand, isn’t a fibre at all. It’s a weaving technique that creates a smooth, glossy surface. Satin can be woven from silk, but today it’s far more commonly woven from polyester or nylon. That’s why many products described simply as “satin” have a similar appearance to silk while being completely different materials underneath.

Why It Matters in Everyday Wear

This is where it stops being a technical distinction and starts becoming something you can actually feel.

Polyester satin has a smooth surface, but it tends to be less breathable than genuine mulberry silk. In Singapore’s warm and humid climate, that can mean feeling warmer and less comfortable throughout the night.

Mulberry silk, by contrast, is naturally breathable and temperature-regulating. It feels cool against the skin while allowing heat and moisture to dissipate more comfortably. The smooth surface of silk also creates less friction against skin and hair, which is one of the reasons many people choose silk pillowcases and sleepwear.

So... Is Silk better than Satin?

It depends on what satin is made from.

If satin is woven from genuine silk, then you’re comparing two different things—a fibre and a weave. But when people ask whether silk is better than satin, they’re usually comparing mulberry silk with polyester satin.

For us, the difference comes down to comfort. If you’re looking for a fabric that’s naturally breathable, beautifully soft and comfortable to sleep in night after night, genuine mulberry silk offers qualities that synthetic satin simply can’t replicate.

Why we chose Silk

Once we experienced the difference ourselves, we couldn’t un-feel it. That became the starting point for Silk Madame.

Rather than taking shortcuts with synthetic satin or blended fabrics, we chose to craft every piece using 100% Grade 6A mulberry silk, woven in 19 momme and OEKO-TEX® certified.

Not because those specifications sound impressive, but because they translate into something you’ll notice every time you wear them: comfort, breathability and lasting quality.

If you've only ever known polyester "silk," we'd love for you to feel the real thing.
